Newly appointed Music Director of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, 37-year-old Spanish conductor Josep Caballé-Domenech is consistently cited for his passion and insightful interpretations. Eliciting a consistently beautiful and lush sound from the orchestra, his performances have been hailed throughout Europe, Scandinavia and Japan.
Active as a guest conductor around the world, Mr.Caballé-Domenech’s engagements include the Aalborg Symphony, Bamberg Symphony, BBC Orchestra/Wales, BBC Orchestra/Ulster, Belgian National Orchestra, Bern Symphony, Brno Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, DSO/Berlin, Graz Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Malmø Symphony Orchestra, Munich Radio Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi/Milan, Porto National Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic/London, Royal Scottish Orchestra, RTE National Orchestra/Dublin, RTVE Orchestra/Madrid, San Antonio Symphony, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Orchestra, Tonkünstlerorchester/Vienna, Trondheim Symphony, WDR/Cologne and the Zurich Tonhalle. Among Mr. Caballé-Domenech’s upcoming engagements are the Baden-Baden Symphony, St. Gallen Symphony, Tampere Symphony, the Schleswig-Holstein festival, as well as a production of Figaro at the Dresden Semperoper and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet at the opera house in Bilbao.
Mr. Caballé-Domenech made his opera debut at Barcelona’s Liceu conducting performances of Mozart’s Così fan tutti. Subsequent productions at the Liceu include Haydn’s Il mondo della luna, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Granados’s Maria del Carmen, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. He has also led Liceu productions at the Savonlinna Festival and at La Fenice in Venice. Mr. Caballé-Domenech has conducted Le nozze di Figaro at the Stuttgart State Opera, Tosca, Carmen and Le nozze di Figaro at the Vienna Volksoper, La Bohème at Lisbon’s Teatro São Carlos, and a highly acclaimed production of Luisa Fernanda at the Theater an der Wien with Placido Domingo in the principal role.
Josep Caballé-Domenech was principal guest conductor of the Norrköping Symphony from 2005-07, and has appeared numerous times as guest conductor at the Aspen, Texas and Wintergreen summer festivals.
Born in Barcelona to a family of musicians, Josep Caballé-Domenech’s early studies included piano, violin, voice and percussion. He later studied conducting at the University of Music and Scenic Arts in Vienna and at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen with David Zinman, Jorma Panula and Sergiu Comissiona, where he also received the Aspen Prize. Mr. Caballé-Domenech was named Sir Colin Davis Protégé in the inaugural cycle of Rolex’s Mentor/Protégé Arts Initiative in 2002.
